Physicians Surgery Center 1st in Tennessee to offer robotic orthopedic surgery

Jackson, Tenn.-based West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic orthopedic surgeons began using the NAVIO robotic-assisted surgery system for total and partial knee replacements in July.

Here's what you should know:

1. Their use of the new robotic procedure make Jackson, Tenn.-based Physicians Surgery Center the first freestanding, physician-owned ASC in the state to offer robotic-assisted orthopedic surgery.

2. Smith & Nephew manufactures the handheld NAVIO Surgical System. It allows surgeons to create individualized plans for knee replacement procedures and precisely align implants without exposing patients to CT radiation.

3. West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic orthopedic surgeon L. David Johnson, MD, said robotic-arm assisted total and partial knee arthroplasty treatments can minimize pain and improve early functional recovery.

4. West Tennessee Bone & Joint Clinic orthopedic surgeons Jason Hutchison, MD, and J. Douglas Haltom, MD, are also proponents of robotic assistance for knee replacement surgeries.
