Briefly overlapping surgeries can be performed in ASCs without increasing complications, according to an infographic created by the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Researchers completed a retrospective chart review of 22,220 orthopedic procedures from 2009 to 2015.

2. The review included 5,198 overlapping surgeries, which involve one surgeon attending two patients with open incisions. Researchers reviewed 17,022 non-overlapping surgeries.

3. The median overlap time was eight minutes.

4. There was no significant association between overlapping surgeries and complications.

5. Overlapping surgeries had a lower percentage of infections and hospitalization, but a higher percentage of non-infection complications.
