Physicians at Northwell Health's Manhasset, N.Y.-based Schwartz Ambulatory Center now perform total hip replacement surgery.
The key details to know:
1. The center's first hip procedure was done Feb. 11.
2. After surgery, Northwell Health providers coordinate outpatient physical therapy plans with patients.
3. Schwartz Ambulatory Center surgeons started offering total shoulder procedures last year. Northwell's orthopedic surgery chair Nick Sgaglione, MD, said advances in pain management have improved the surgical processes, giving patients the option to recover from home.
4. New York City-based Northwell Health plans to offer same-day total joint surgeries for hips, knees and shoulders at other ASCs in its network.
"In order to have the best outcomes for same-day total joint replacement surgery, candidates for the procedure must be carefully selected," Dr. Sgaglione said. "Patients are evaluated for several possible risk factors – associated medical issues, generalized health and fitness and how robust support is at home."
