More than half of hip replacements last up to 25 years in patients with osteoarthritis, according to a study published in The Lancet.
Researchers in the United Kingdom conducted a joint registry search of 92 case series reporting hip implant longevity. The cases involved 215,676 hip replacements.
The key details to know:
1. At 15 years, about 89 percent of hip replacements survived.
2. At 20 years, approximately 70 hip replacements survived.
3. At 25 years, about 58 percent of hip replacements survived.
4. All-cause survivorship was 89.4 percent.
5. Researchers concluded, "Although there is not enough information yet available to calculate exactly how long a hip replacement will last, using available arthroplasty registry data, we estimate that about three-quarters of hip replacements last 15 to 20 years, and just over half of hip replacements last 25 years in patients with osteoarthritis."
