Business Administrator Sarah Sterling of Post Street Surgery Center in San Francisco provides some of the surgery center's best practices in successfully recruiting physicians.

1. Measure the physician's compatibility with the facility's environment. It is important for a surgery center to recruit a physician that works well within the facility's environment. To ensure the personality of the physician aligns with the facility, Ms. Sterling will often consult various sources and view feedback about the physician.

"We may consult Yelp and other sites, such as HealthGrades and Google, to check out physician ratings and comments that were put up about them," she says.

2. Hold references in high regard. In addition to checking online sources for feedback and ratings on physicians, references should be checked to see how those physicians conduct themselves not only in the operating rooms but outside of them as well.

"It's important that the physician in an OR doesn't create a stressful environment because we don't want to stress the surgical team," Ms. Sterling says. "If we get a physician that wants to be privileged here to do cases, we ask around about the physician to see what turns up."

3. Check the physician's background. Checking a physician's background may include looking into whether that physician is board-certified in their specialty, checking the National Practitioner Databank for any negative or derogatory reports or looking through the physician's American Medical Association profile for verification of licensure and certification.
