Researchers at New Haven, Conn.-based Yale University have sequenced the RNA of the human retina, according to an Oct. 22 report by the Yale Daily News.
Brian Hafler, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology, and his team used a multistep process to sequence more than 20,000 cells and collaborated with Cambridge, Mass.-based MIT and Harvard University to compute the information into raw data, the report said. The new visualization let scientists pinpoint two cell types associated with age-related macular degeneration risk.
The findings yield potential to find new ways to treat the condition, the report said. Researchers believe the single-cell sequencing method Dr. Hafler and his team used could be used to identify new pathways to treatment.
