Several family physicians and students at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine formed the student-run Free Clinic Project and provide ophthalmology and a range of other services to patients without health insurance.
The clinic has been providing services, which also include dental and primary care, for more than a decade. It's has become one of the largest and best-run free clinics in the nation, according to co-founder and Executive Director Ellen Beck, MD.
The free services provided are valued at $4 million annually. All volunteer clinicians and a slew of grants make the operation possible.
