Dr. Meera Ramanathan, Researchers Identify 3 Predictive Factors for Glaucoma

Meera Ramanathan, MD, of the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles, and a team of researchers have identified three predictive factors that determine the risk of progression and visual loss in open-angle glaucoma patients, according to a Medscape report.

The study included 767 eyes of 566 patients. Of the eyes studied, 222 showed rapid progression and 545 eyes showed slow progression. The three factors Dr. Ramanathan and the research team identified as indicators of rapid progression are:
•    Worse mean deviation to the visual field
•    Age
•    Greater vertical cup-to-disc ratio at baseline

The study classified rapid progression to be a rate of 36% in visual change per year.
