9 Cataract Surgery Patient Outcome Benchmarks

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare has conducted a series of clinical studies on cataract extraction surgeries with lens insertion, the most common outpatient surgical procedure, and released nine patient outcome statistics.

The patient outcomes include:
•    89 percent had to wait less than a month after scheduling the procedure to the time of the procedure
•    94 percent resumed normal daily living within a week of receiving the procedure
•    94 percent reported improved vision after the surgery
•    96 percent said they were able to schedule surgery at the desired time
•    98 percent indicated they were comfortable while undergoing the procedure
•    99 percent reported being comfortable after discharge
•    99 percent said they had a sufficient understanding of the procedure
•    99 percent said their physicians found their eyesight to be better or the same after surgery
•    99 percent reported that they would recommend the procedure

The data was gathered from 92 organizations that perform an estimated combined total of 170,000 cataract surgeries a year.
