The Federal Trade Commission has unanimously approved the sale of the Center for Surgical Excellence in Roanoke, Va., one of two outpatient centers Carilion Clinic acquired in 2008, according to The Roanoke Times. The buyer is a group of Roanoke physicians, and the sale is expected to be final within 30 days.
The government ruled that the acquisitions of the two outpatient centers were illegal and anti-competitive and therefore is forcing Carilion to divest them. No buyer has been disclosed for the other center, the Center for Advanced Imaging, according to the Times report.
The purchasers of the surgical center are eight physicians with Valley Nephrology Associates, which formed a corporate entity, Fairlawn Surgery Center, in January in order to buy the surgical center.
