Surgical Patients With IBD at Greater Risk for Blood Clots

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at greater risk for postoperative deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, according to a study published Oct. 17 in the Archives of Surgery.

According to the study, patients with IBD have historically been known to develop thromboembolic complications. However, current guidelines for DVT and PE prophylaxis do not mention patients with IBD.

The study included 211 member hospitals and 271,368 surgical patients. Of those patients, 2,249 were diagnosed with IBD and were compared to the 269,119 patients without IBD. The researchers determined the incidence of DVT, PE, stroke and myocardial infarction within 30 days of surgery.

The researchers found that IBD was a risk factor for blood clots, but found no increased risk among patients with IBD for postoperative myocardial infarction or stroke.
