Lou Holtz Shares 5 Leadership Principles at the 10th Annual Orthopedic, Spine & Pain-Management-Driven ASC Conference

At a session at the 10th Annual Orthopedic, Spine and Pain Management-Driven ASC Conference, Lou Holtz, legendary football coach and ESPN analyst, shared his thoughts on leadership with attendees.

He boiled his philosophy on leadership down to five key tenets.

1. Attitude. "I think the attitude we have is more important than anything else," he said, explaining that everyone will face adversity and difficulty at some point in their lives, but it's each of our responsibilities to pick ourselves up. You're going to be down, but it's up to you to pick yourself up," he said.

2. A passion to win. "Everyone must have a passion to win, to succeed at what you do," he said. He added that to succeed, though, you have to make sacrifices and be willing to work and avoid excuses. "Focus on why you can do something, and don't listen to other people."

3. Focus on your purpose.
For surgery centers, Mr. Holtz, remarked the purpose is really just two things: care for the patient and make a profit. He said everyone should focus on their purpose and avoid distractions.

4. Be a dreamer. "Everyone needs four things in your life: something to do, someone to love, someone to believe in, something to hope for." This something to hope for, or dream, is simply something you want to accomplish, and there are "no age restrictions on it," said Mr. Holtz.

Then, "WIN; do What's Important Now to get it done," he said.

5. Make good choices. "Make good choices, that's all," he said. He then shared three laws to make good choices. The first is "do what's right," because doing what's right breeds trust — a critical element of a winning team, organization or relationship. Next, "do everything to the very best of your ability," which shows you are committed to excellence. If you don't, you are likely letting other people down. The last rule is "just show people you care."

"The only way people are going to miss you is if you add value to other people's lives, and I guarantee you'll add value to people's lives if you follow those three rules."

In closing, he added that the responsibility of leader is to help people make good choices. "Don't attack the performer, attack the performance," he said.
