Lawmakers Visit Wyoming, New Jersey Surgery Centers

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Jon Runyan (R-N.J.) visited local ambulatory surgery centers in April to learn about the ASC industry and the benefits of outpatient surgical care, according to an ASCA release.

Sen. Barrasso visited Northern Wyoming Surgical Center in Cody on April 21. He received a tour from Todd Currier, administrator, and Sandy Livesay, director of nursing, during which the group discussed the positive economic impact of ASCs on the healthcare system. The senator asked about the effects of the growing disparity between ASC reimbursement rates and HOPD rates.

Rep. John Runyan visited Toms River Surgery Center in New Jersey on April 20. He met and had lunch with the center's management team; the group discussed the services and quality of care provided by the ASC.

Prior to his election to the U.S. Senate, Sen. Barrasso practiced as an orthopedic surgeon for 24 years in Wyoming. Rep. Runyan, a former NFL football player, has had both knee and ankle surgeries but has never experienced care in the ASC setting.

The ASC Association asks centers planning on hosting a facility tour to contact Morgan Hanson at mhanson@ascassociation.org.
