Cataracts affect more than 22 million people in the United States, or more than half the population over the age of 65, according to a UPI report.
Preston Blomquist, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said cataract surgery is the most effective procedure, with a 95 percent success rate.
