Hospital representatives in North Carolina staunchly oppose a bill that would ease the difficulty of the state's certificate of need process for ASCs. The State Employees Association of North Carolina and N.C. Orthopaedic Association are among the bill's supporters.
Physician numbers decrease in 20 states.
Physician numbers have decreased by 5.9 percent in Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island physician numbers have dropped by 5.7 percent. New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania numbers have dropped by 2.3 percent. Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama numbers have dropped by 1.5 percent.

Regent Surgical Health and physician partners of Endosurgical Center of Central New Jersey have entered into a joint venture with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Brunswick, N.J.
89 people charged for $213M in Medicare fraud.
In the sixth national Medicare fraud takedown conducted by the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, 89 people spread across the country in Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Baton Rouge, La., Tampa, Fla., and Brooklyn, N.Y., were charged for a variety of plots totaling $223 million in Medicare fraud.
Outdated technology costs healthcare $5.15B each year.
According to a Ponemon Institute report, the use of outdated communication technology, such as pagers, annually costs the healthcare industry $5.15 billion. Physicians, nurses and healthcare staff waste an average of 45 minutes each day using outdated technology.
AMA contests ICD-10, jump to ICD-11.
The American Medical Association has been a vocal in its resistance of the ICD-10 timeline, which sets the deadline for implementation at Oct. 1, 2014. The World Health Organization plans to finalize a beta version of ICD-11 by May 2015, prompting many in the healthcare industry to suggest leaping past ICD-10 entirely in favor beginning ICD-11. The AMA has opposed this as well.
Saint Francis Hospital absorbs surgery center.
Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., has absorbed Hudson Valley Center at Saint Francis, a previously joint venture surgery center between a group of surgeon owners and the hospital.
