Here are seven things for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for September 23, 2013.

National healthcare spending growth to remain slow over next decade.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have reported that healthcare spending is expected to grow 5.8 percent each year through 2022. The lagging economic recovery, increase costs for the privately insured and slow growth of public programs all play a role in the slow growth rate of overall healthcare spending.

Study finds colonoscopies could prevent 40% of colon cancer cases.
A study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown that colonoscopy as a screening tool for colon cancer prevention is superior to sigmoidoscopies. The study includes 88,902 patients, 1,815 of which developed colorectal cancer, over a 22-year period. The researchers believe a colonoscopy could have prevented 40 percent of the colorectal cancer cases.

Aesthetic Surgery Center of Winter Park adds Dr. Daryl Weir.
Daryl Weir, MD, has joined the medical staff of the Aesthetic Surgery Center of Winter Park (Fla.). Dr. Weir is a general surgeon with more than 30 years of experience in breast surgery. He currently serves as the medical director of Orlando Surgery Center.

Dr. Bridget Sundell to break ground on joint venture Minnesota surgery center.
Ophthalmologist Bridget Sundell, MD, and Fairview Range in Hibbing will break ground on the joint venture Northwoods Surgery Center in Virginia, Minn., on Sept. 24. The surgery center will offer ophthalmology, orthopedics, general surgery and ENT services.

Joint Commission accredits MD Laser Surgery Center.
MD Laser Surgery Center in Columbia, Md., has earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval. Clement Banda, MD, is the founder and medical director of the MD Laser Medicine & Surgery Practice.

53% of physicians are self-employed.
The American Medical Association has released a study that reports 53.2 percent of physicians were self-employed in 2012. Though more than half of physicians are self-employed, hospital integration is on the rise. Physician-hospital employment increased from 16.3 percent in 2007/2008 AMA report to 29 percent in 2012.

New Federal initiative seeks to protect PPACA exchange consumers.
Federal officials met at the White House last week to launch a new fraud and privacy policy violation prevention and protection initiative for consumers using the health insurance marketplaces mandated by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
