Ellis Medicine fights Albany Med's proposed ASC — 4 insights

Schenectady, N.Y.-based Ellis Medicine is seeking to block Albany (N.Y.) Med's request to build an ASC nearby in Niskayuna, N.Y., The Daily Gazette reports.

Here's what you know:

1. Albany Med requested a certificate of need to add an ASC to its new EmUrgentCare building.

2. Ellis Medicine, which offers ambulatory surgery services less than a mile away from the EmUrgentCare building, said the addition would siphon wealthier patients from its own hospital and ambulatory facilities. As a safety-net hospital, Ellis said it depends on wealthier patients to pay their bills.

3. Ellis also said its nearby ambulatory surgery facility is at under 50 percent capacity, so there's no need for additional services.

4. Ellis will present its arguments Nov. 29 to the state committee that will decide whether to issue the CON.
