The Hawaii State Health Planning and Development Agency denied Kahului, Hawaii-based Maui Spine and Laser Institute's certificate of need to establish an ASC.
Here's what you should know:
1. Maui Spine and Laser Institute proposed establishing an ASC for $7,225,000.
2. The practice aimed to establish an ASC dedicated to neurological and pain management procedures in Kahului, Hawaii.
3. In a July 30 decision letter, the agency said it determined the practice had not "made a collaborative arrangement with an existing acute care hospital" or proved the proposal's benefits outweighed the requirement to do so. The agency found "the proposal is not consistent with the state health services and facilities plan in effect."
4. Maui Spine and Laser Institute was permitted to request a public hearing for reconsideration of the agency's decision by Aug. 9.
