6 Surgery Centers Employing Direct-to-Patient Marketing Tactics

Central Illinois Endoscopy Center (Peoria). The surgery center interacts directly with its patients through its Facebook page, blog and its newsletter. It uses these platforms to spread information regarding its services and events. For example, the center held its first Annual Colorectal Cancer Awareness Event in 2012 and publicized it on its blog as well as on Facebook. The center also blogs about its achievements, such as being recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy. Established in 2009, the endoscopy center offers a variety of services, such as colonoscopy, upper endoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. The center's physicians are all a part of the Illinois Gastroenterology Institute.

East Bay Endoscopy Center (Oakland, Calif.). The outpatient, endoscopic facility offers current and prospective patients a newsletter called Gut Check, which provides information and news about digestive health. The website includes videos about colon cancer, what to expect at colonoscopies and reasons for choosing an ASC as well as quiz to test colon cancer knowledge. The surgery center also offers the option of sending e-cards to remind friends and family to get screened for colon cancer or to congratulate them if they have recently completed a colonoscopy. Established in 1976, the surgery center's physicians focus on gastroenterological procedures, including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. It is staffed by eight physicians and managed by AmSurg.

Rockford (Ill.) Ambulatory Surgery Center. The surgery center offers a newsletter for patients called Inside RASC, which includes information about the ASC, procedures performed at the center and even profiles of staff members. The center's website also includes frequently asked questions about the ASC and their answers as well as success stories from patients. Opened in 1994, the center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It has on average 5,635 patient visits annually. Physicians at the center offer surgical services in a wide-array of specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, ENT, dental surgery, orthopedics, podiatry, urology and pain management.

Stony Point Surgery Center (Richmond, Va.). The surgery center interacts with its current and potential patients through its blog and Facebook page. Its blog, called Health Matters, includes insight from nurses and surgeons on wellness, common ailments and procedures performed by physicians at Stony Point. The center is active on Facebook and regularly posts articles on health issues as well as events that it organizes. Stony Point is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and offer surgical services in ENT, ophthalmology, podiatry, interventional spine and orthopedics, among other specialties.

Surgery Center of Oklahoma (Oklahoma City). The surgery center interacts with patients directly through a number of online platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter and the Tumblr blog operated by Keith Smith, MD, founder, administrator and an anesthesiologist at the center. The center regularly posts articles on its social medial platforms about the healthcare industry as well as information specific to the Surgery Center of Oklahoma and its physicians. The center is lists its procedure prices on its website and is known for its price transparency. The 32,535-square-foot multispecialty facility is owned and operated by approximately 40 surgeons and anesthesiologists. The center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It offers services in a number of specialties, including anesthesiology, general surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, orthopedics and urology.  

Wooster (Ohio) Ambulatory Surgery Center. The surgery center held an open house earlier this year to showcase its facility, promote the use of ASCs and interact with its patients. The center conducted the open house in August as part of National ASC Day. The website also includes physician photos, which appeal directly to patients. The center offers surgical services in numerous specialties, including ENT, gastroenterology, anesthesiology, gynecology, orthopedics, pain management and podiatry. The center has been open since 2008 and has performed more than 12,000 procedures, according to a report by The Daily Record.
