4 Magnificent Orthopedic Knee Surgeons Who Practice in ASCs

Here are four magnificent orthopedic knee surgeons who practice in ambulatory surgery centers. We are always interested in profiling great surgeons and administrators. James Andrews, MD. Founding Member, Andrews Institute Ambulatory Sugery Center (Gulf Breeze, Fla.). Dr. Andrews is an orthopedist based in Gulf Breeze, Fla. He is a founding member of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center with locations in Birmingham, Hoover and Pelham. Dr. Andrews is a founding partner and Medical Director of the Andrews Institute and the Andrews-Paulos Research and Education Institute in Gulf Breeze, Fla., both of which are dedicated education, prevention and research of sports injuries.

Dr. Andrews has made a career of correcting sports injuries. He is also a founding member, chairman and medical director of the American Sports Medicine Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to outreach regarding sports medicine and orthopedic injuries. Throughout his career, Dr. Andrews has mentored more than 300 fellows in orthopedic and primary care sports medicine through the ASMI Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Andrews is senior consultant for the Washington Redskins, medical director for the Tampa Bay Rays, team physician for the Birmingham Barons, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox and medical director of the Ladies Professional Golf Association. He has also served on the Sports Medicine Committee of the United States Olympic Committee.

He is member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has served as a past president, treasurer and secretary of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and as a board member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Knee Society. He is also a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at the University Alabama Birmingham Medical School, University of Virginia School of Medicine, University of Kentucky Medical Center and University of South Carolina Medical School.

Brian Cole, MD, MBA. Midwest Orthopedics at Rush (Chicago). Dr. Cole is chairman of surgery at Rush Oak Park (Ill.) Hospital and section head of the Cartilage Research and Restoration Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, which focuses on treating arthritis in young and active patients. He is also a professor in Rush University Medical Center's department of orthopedics. In addition, he is a member of Midwest Orthopedics at Rush, a practice of more than 40 orthopedists in business for more than 30 years. Dr. Cole is an investor in Gold Cost Surgicenter.

In his work, Dr. Cole has researched and developed several new techniques for the treatment of shoulder, elbow and knee conditions, including cartilage restoration to repair otherwise permanently injured joints. He lectures internationally, has published five orthopedics textbooks and more than 1,000 articles and has co-hosted a Saturday morning sports medicine program on Chicago's WMVP-AM/1000, the proceeds of which he uses to fund orthopedic research, according to a report from Crain's Chicago Business.

Dr. Cole is team physician for the Chicago Bulls, co-team physician for the White Sox and co-team physician for DePaul University's sports teams in Chicago. He was recently responsible for operating on Chicago Bull Derrick Rose's left knee, an operation which allowed the basketball player to return to the game after an 18 month hiatus. Dr. Cole also repaired Mr. Rose's knee when he re-injured it during the fall of 2013 along with his colleague, Charles Bush-Joseph, MD.

Robert F. LaPrade, MD, PhD. The Steadman Clinic (Vail, Colo.). Dr. LaPrade subspecializes in sports medicine, particularly in the treatment of complex knee injuries, the subject on which he earned his PhD, titled "The Anatomy, Diagnosis and Biomechanics of Posterolateral Knee Injuries." His particular interests include posterolateral knee injuries, PCL tears, revision ACL reconstructions, meniscal transplants, MCL injuries, knee osteotomies and fresh osteoarticular allografts. Dr. LaPrade performs cases at Vail Valley Surgery Center.

Dr. LaPrade has published more than 125 peer-reviewed papers, has contributed more than 50 invited articles and book chapters and has authored a textbook on the treatment of knee injuries, "Posterolateral Knee Injuries: Anatomy, Function and Treatment." He is on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and Knee Surgery, Arthroscopy and Traumatology and is a peer-reviewer for several journals, including Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Orthopaedic Research and Knee Surgery and Sports Traumatology.

He has served as a team physician for the University of Minnesota's ice hockey and men's baseball teams and has collaborated with the Norwegian Olympic Center at the University of Oslo to research innovative treatment techniques for complex knee injury reconstructions. He is also the director of biomechanics research at The Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America and International Cartilage Repair Society.

Charles A. Bush-Joseph, MD, Midwest Orthopedics at Rush (Chicago). Dr. Bush-Joseph subspecializes in sports medicine and is a knee, shoulder and hip orthopedic surgeon. He a professor at the Rush University Medical Center and is associate director of the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Rush.

Dr. Bush-Joseph is head team physician for the Chicago White Sox and associate team physician for the Chicago Bulls. He was elected to the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Board and to the presidency of the Major League Baseball Team Physician Association for 2012.

He is a seasoned orthopedic educator and lecturer and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, among other orthopedic journals. He is a committee member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He has also served as a member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Sports Medicine Examination Committee, which creates the board exam for sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons.

In addition to his other obligations, Dr. Bush-Joseph performs around 400 surgeries annually, one-quarter of which are knee-related repairs. He takes the majority of his cases at Rush SurgiCenter.
