The top 10 challenges healthcare executives anticipate for 2019

Healthcare executives from payer, provider and technology partner organizations ranked the top 10 challenges, issues and opportunities they expect to face in 2019 for HealthCare Executive Group. 

More than 100 participants discussed a list of 25-plus topics and voted on the top 10 most relevant to healthcare organizations.

Here's what they selected:

1. Data and analytics: Leveraging data to manage health and drive decisions
2. Total consumer health: Improving members' medical, social, financial and environmental well-being
3. Population health services: Focusing on community-based health strategy, chronic care management, clinical integration and addressing health barriers
4. Value-based payments: Targeting specific medical conditions to control costs and improve care quality
5. The digital healthcare organization: Managing portals, patient literacy, cost transparency, digital payments and more
6. Rising pharmacy costs: Implementing strategies to address cost increases
7. External market disruption: Responding to outside disruptors such as Amazon, Apple and Google
8. Operational effectiveness: Implementing lean quality programs, process efficiency, robotics automation and more to improve efficiency
9. Opioid management: Identifying and supporting individuals facing substance abuse and addiction
10. Cybersecurity: Protecting consumer information privacy and security
