The American Academy of Ophthalmology received a $4 million donation from ophthalmologist Stanley Truhlsen, MD, to open the world's first public museum dedicated to ophthalmology, Optometry Today reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. AAO expects to open the museum in San Francisco by 2020.
2. The museum will house more than 38,000 pieces of ophthalmology-related artifacts.
3. AAO has raised one-third of the funds needed to provide a permanent endowment and offer free public access.
4. Dr. Truhlsen said, "For thousands of years, ophthalmology has pushed the envelope, discovering breakthrough innovations to protect sight. The museum is a vehicle by which our heritage remains both relevant and inspiring; promoting continued discovery and advancement."
