Healthcare Solutions Consulting Principal and former ASC Administrator John D. Brock shared four leadership tips for medical directors in the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association's ASC Physician Focus newsletter.
The key insights to know:
1. Set term limits. Medical directors should have term limits of two to three years.
2. Consider anesthesiologist leadership. Due to being on-site more oftem than other physicians, anesthesiologists can be successful ASC medical directors. Mr. Brock also suggests ASC medical directors be investors in the center.
3. Look for someone who can be a mentor. The medical director can serve as a mentor to the ASC's director of nursing and take responsibility for bringing a new DON on board.
4. Leverage medical directors as a resource. Medical directors can provide insight on clinical operations to ASC employees who may not have a clinical background.
