Illinois surgery center offers new glaucoma treatment — 3 insights

Effingham (Ill.) Ambulatory Surgery Center began offering the iStent inject Trabecular Micro-Bypass System to improve glaucoma patients' quality of life, the Effingham Daily News reports.

What you should know:

1. The iStent inject includes two implants, which surgeons place during cataract surgery.

2. The implants reduce the pressure associated with glaucoma.

3. Some patients have been able to reduce their reliance on glaucoma medication after receiving the stents.

Ophthalmologist Joe Spraul, MD, said the surgery center added the iStent because, "We are committed to providing the best possible care for our patients."
