Average income for top 20 recruited specialties: No. 1 specialty makes $579k

The following 20 specialties feature the most highly recruited physicians, according to Merritt Hawkins 2017 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Incentives.

Merritt Hawkins based their findings on 3,287 permanent physician and advance practitioner search assignments that Merritt conducted with Kendall Davis and Staff Care from April 2016 to March 2017.

Here is the average 2016 to 2017 income for the top 20 recruited specialties:

•    Anesthesiology: $376,000
•    Cardiology (invasive): $563,000
•    Cardiology (non-invasive): $428,000
•    Dermatology: $421,000
•    Emergency medicine: $349,000
•    Family medicine: $231,000
•    Gastroenterology: $492,000
•    General surgery: $411,000
•    Hospitalist: $264,000
•    Internal medicine: $257,000
•    Nurse practitioner: $123,000
•    Obstetrics and gynecology: $335,000
•    Orthopedic surgery: $579,000
•    Otolaryngology: $468,000
•    Pediatrics: $240,000
•    Physician assistant: $120,000
•    Psychiatry: $263,000
•    Radiology: $436,000
•    Urgent care: $219,000
