The U.S. Multi-Society Task Force made a series of recommendations around endoscopic removal of colorectal cancer lesions in the March issue of The American Journal of Gastroenterology.
.
The task force found colonoscopy with polypectomy is the gold standard to prevent CRC mortality and reduce CRC incidence rate. Removing adenomas during a colonoscopy reduced CRC mortality by up to 50 percent when compared to a controlled population.
The task force made recommendations because polyp removal during colonoscopy has been historically understudied. The task force found 20 percent of incident cancers could be tied to incomplete resection. To address this, the task force made a number of recommendations on the management of malignant polyps, polyposis syndromes, and surveillance after colonoscopy and polypectomy.
