UC San Diego taps chief of GI, hepatology

The University of California San Diego School of Medicine has named Rohit Loomba, MD, its chief of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology, effective June 1. 

Dr. Loomba has been with UCSD since 2007, serving as director of hepatology and a professor of medicine. He has been focused on researching treatments for gastrointestinal diseases, collaborating inside and outside of the institution. 

He is also the founding director of the Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Research Center at UC San Diego, according to a June 13 press release. He has published more than 425 manuscripts and is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. 

In his new role, Dr. Loomba plans to build a transformational team that will deliver extraordinary patient care.
