A new study found that at least 70 genetic mutations are involved in the formation of colon cancer, significantly more than was previously thought, according to a news release by UT Southwestern Medical Center.
The study, conducted at the medical center and published in Cancer Research, offered a new approach to colon cancer treatments that would target multiple genes and pathways at once.
Scientists had previously thought that just 8-15 mutations would lead to colon cancer.
