A new study has found that the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch procedure reduces significantly more weight than other bariatric procedures but remains riskier, according to an Annals of Internal Medicine report.
The procedure, also known as the Gastric Reduction Duodenal Switch, inhibits absorption of calories or fats from food consumed by patients.
Two years after surgery, patients had lost 50 pounds more on average than those who underwent gastric bypass weight loss surgery. But because of the risks, authors said the procedure should only be performed on carefully selected patients.
