Indigo Carmine Enhances Adenoma Detection in Screening Colonoscopy

Endoscopists who added indigo dye during a water-infusion colonoscopy detected more adenomas, according to findings presented at the American College of Gastroenterology annual meeting.

Joseph W. Leung, MD, and his colleagues conducted a randomized, controlled trial in which 10 mL of 0.8 percent indigo carmine was added to each 1 liter of water. Two groups of 84 patients each were given water-infusion colonoscopies with and without indigo carmine. The adenoma detection rate in the indigo carmine group was 62 percent, while the rate in the water-only group was 44 percent.
