How Medtronic's GI line fared in 2023

Healthcare devicemaker Medtronic has established itself as a significant player in robotic surgery technology in recent years, and 2023 was no exception.

Although the company recently earned the FDA's first approval for an irregular heartbeat device, it is best known for its gastroenterology and endoscopy technology. Medtronic's artificial intelligence-driven GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module received de novo clearance from the FDA in April 2021 and has risen in popularity since.

Hospitals and health systems added the technology to their gastroenterology and endoscopy practices in 2023; that list includes big-name chains such as United Digestive. In August, the management services group added the GI Genius module to all 22 of its affiliated ASCs.

Looking forward, the company expanded its partnership with Cosmo Intelligent Medical Devices to further capitalize on the success of the GI Genius. Through the partnership, Medtronic and Cosmo intend to focus on the development of AI Access, a scalable platform designed to host multiple third-party AI applications to allow for streamlining of the AI development process.
