Diabetes May Predispose Barrett's Esophagus Sufferers To Esophageal Cancer

A study led by Prashanthi Thota, MD, of The Cleveland Clinic's department of gastroenterology and heptaology, has linked diabetes in patients with Barrett's esophagus with a greater risk of developing esophageal cancer, according to a Daily Rx report.

The research team looked at 1,623 patients with Barrett's esophagus, of which 274 also had diabetes at the start or were diagnosed later on. Nearly 18 percent of diabetic patients developed precancerous changes in cells, compared to 9.7 percent without diabetes.
