AGA Pays Tribute to Dr. Joseph Kirsner

The American Gastroenterological Association has published a column paying tribute to former AGA president and renowned gastroenterologist Joseph Kirsner, MD, PhD.

Dr. Kirsner died July 7 in Chicago at the age of 102.

He was the Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and considered a pioneer in gastroenterology who broke ground in the understanding and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

He received AGA's highest honor, the Julius Friedenwald Medal, in 1975.

"Dr. Kirsner was one of the most important and influential leaders within gastroenterology, the AGA and the broader American medical community," said Loren Laine, MD, AGAF, president of AGA Institute, in the column. "With his passing, we honor his career and legacy as a clinician, mentor, researcher and inspirational figure."

AGA has set up a discussion board where members can post their reflections on Dr. Kirsner's life and contributions.
