10 Gastroenterology & Endoscopy Companies for ASC Leaders to Know

From supplies and scopes to development and revenue cycle management, here are 10 gastroenterology and endoscopy-focused companies serving the ambulatory surgery center industry.

Boston Scientific. Boston Scientific, a medical product and technologies company, is headquartered in Marlborough, Mass., and has locations through North American, Africa and the Middle East. The company serves several specialties including gastroenterology. Michael F. Mahoney serves as CEO and David A. Pierce is a senior vice president and president of endoscopy.

Boston Scientific offers technology for GI/endoscopy procedures such as balloon dilation, stenting, ERCP, biliary, biopsy, polypectomy, hemostasis, radio frequency ablation and enteral feeding. Thus far this year, Boston Scientific has received FDA 510(k) clearance for several devices including:

•    Advanix Pancreatic Stent and Naviflex Rapid Exchange Pancreatic Delivery System and Pushers
•    Captivator II, Single-Use Polypectomy Snares
•    Expect Slimline Endoscopic Ultrasound Aspiration Needle
•    Wallflex Biliary Rx Stent System

Covidien. Covidien is a global healthcare products provider. The company's U.S. headquarters are located in Mansfield, Mass. Covidien's GI Solutions executive team is lead by vice president and general manager Vafa Jamali. Covidien is known for several products, including the Barrx RF Ablation System for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Thus far in 2014, Covidien has earned FDA 510(k) clearance for a number of devices including GI/endoscopy devices such as:

•    ENDO GIA Extra Long Adapter from Covidien.
•    ENDO GIA Reinforced Reload with Tri-Staple Technology from Covidien.

EndoChoice. EndoChoice, based in Atlanta, Ga., is a medical technology company focused on the manufacture and commercialization of devices, endoscopic imaging, diagnostics and infection control for the GI field. Mark Gilreath is the company's founder, president and CEO. Mike Lambert serves as the company's CFO and Kevin Rubey serves as COO.

Founded in 2008, EndoChoice is relatively new to the medical device field, but its Full Spectrum Endoscopy System drew much attention to the company. A study published this year demonstrated the Fuse System's ability to detect 69 percent more precancerous colon polyps than traditional scopes. The company has also moved forward with new devices this year. Devices that received FDA 510(k) clearance so far this year include:

•    EndoChoice Water Bottle Cap Irrigation System
•    Fuse 1C Colonoscopy System.
•    Injection Needle Seal
•    Single-Use Biopsy Valve

Frontier Healthcare. Frontier Healthcare is an ambulatory center management and development company based in New York. Jordan Fowler, Roy Bejarano and Oleg Gutnik, MD, founded the company in 2010 with a focus on endoscopy centers in the New York market. Since its founding, the company has grown to include more than 10 centers, with a number of others under development, with more than 100 physician partners. Collectively, Frontier Healthcare centers perform more than 100,000 annual procedures.

Frontier Healthcare has actively been opening centers this year. In June, the company and physicians of Long Island Digestive Disease Consultants opened the Long Island Digestive Endoscopy Center in Suffolk County, N.Y. Frontier Healthcare also partnered with Brookhaven Gastroenterology Associates to transition its office-based endoscopy unit in East Patchogue, N.Y., to an endoscopy center, which now operates under the name Great South Bay Endoscopy Center.

FUJIFILM Medical Systems. The endoscopy division of FUJIFILM Medical Systems offers video systems, ultrasound technology, endoscopes, electronic medical records and peripherals. Keiichi Nagata serves as the divisional president of endoscopy. Kurt Cannon is the vice president of sales, marketing, operations and support services for the company's endoscopy division.

The company recently introduced its new 600 Series Endoscopes, which received FDA 510(k) clearance in January. In addition to endoscopy products for the GI field, the company offers endoscopy solutions for the ENT and pulmonary fields.

gMed. gMed offers the gGastro Suite, a complete electronic health record solution designed to serve the GI field. Joseph Rubinsztain, MD, is the company's founder and CEO.

The gGastro is offered as a server-based or cloud-based solution. In addition to the gGastro suite, offers services to help gastroenterologists meet Meaningful Use requirements, understand performance measure reporting, implement a new EHR and maintain effective revenue cycle management.

Olympus. Olympus was originally founded in 1919 as a microscope and thermometer company. Since then the company has expanded into a number of different areas including medical devices. The company's gastroenterology division includes a variety of products for procedures such as colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, EGD, EMR, ERCP, EUS, foreign body retrevial, hemostasis and polypectomy. The company's latest product is the EVIS EXERA III video endoscopy platform.

So far this year the company has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its GI/endoscopy focused Endoscope Position Marking Probe, Endoscope Position Detecting Unit.

Pentax Medical Company. Pentax, headquartered in Japan is a global endoscopic imaging devices and solutions company. The company focuses on the gastroenterology, ENT and pulmonary fields. Pentax offers devices for upper and lower GI procedures, EUS and ERCP. The company also recently launched the endoPRO iQ 7.6, a new software platform for endoscopy units.

In 2014 so far, the company has received FDA 510(k) clearance for devices such as:

•    Pentax Video Colonoscopes from Pentax Medical Company.
•    Pentax Video Upper GI Scopes from Pentax Medical Company.

Physicians Endoscopy. Physicians Endoscopy is a management and development company focused solely on ambulatory endoscopy centers. Barry Tanner leads the company as CEO. Karyn Sablyak, CPA, serves as CFO and Frank Principati serves as COO. Rodger Baca recently joined the company as chief development officer. Ms. Sablyak and Mr. Tanner co-authored the company's business plan.

Physicians Endoscopy owns interest in and manages more than 30 endoscopy centers across the country. The company offers billing services in addition to comprehensive management and development services. In June, the company and five physician partners received state approval to open the Greater Gaston Center in Gastonia, N.C.

US Endoscopy Group. US Endoscopy is a subsidiary of STERIS Corporation. US Endoscopy is led by vice president and general manager Tony Siracusa, general counsel Craig Moore, vice president of sales and marketing Bill Busby and vice president of research and technical innovation Chris Kaye. The company has more than 400 employees and partners in more than 50 countries.

The company's portfolio includes endoscopy products for bleed management and irrigation, scope care, enteroscopy and capsule delivery, ERCP, feeding, foreign body management, laparoscopy, polypectomy and biopsy. In 2014 so far the company has received a number of FDA 510(k) clearances including:

•    Endoscopic Suture Cutter from Monofilament Polypectomy Snare
•    Torrent Irrigation System
•    US Endoscopy Distal Attachment Cap
