A recent survey suggests that physicians are most interested in using social media as an educational tool and as a way to connect with colleagues, according to a HealthTech report. Less importance is placed on staying in touch or connecting with patients or discussing aspects of practice management, the majority of the 671 respondents said.
The findings showed that 88 percent of physician respondents are involved in online social communities for professional purposes. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants indicated that they log in to the websites more frequently than physicians, who average one login per week.
The 12 percent of physicians not involved in social communities most often cited time constraints and privacy and security as deterrents.
