The Rhode Island Medical Society is opposing a proposed hike in the fees that physicians must pay to renew their licenses every other year, according to a Rhode Island Public Radio report.
The increase is not justified by any corresponding costs to the state in maintaining physician licenses, said Steven DeToy, director of government and public affairs for the Medical Society. The proposed cost to physicians would be $1,090 every other year — an increase of 68 percent.
The fee increase is part of the governor's proposed budget for July 2014. If approved, physician license renewal fees in Rhode Island would be 82 percent higher than the fees in Massachusetts and New York.
