A team of researchers at the University of California Davis Center for Health Care Policy Research published a study that showed when physicians expand their office hours, patients' healthcare costs were reduced by more than 10 percent, according to Kaiser Health News.
Primary physicians tend to close their practice on weekends and evenings, so patients turn to urgent care facilities and emergency rooms, contributing to increasing healthcare costs.
According to the study, patients with access to extended hours had less use and lower related expenditures. Healthcare providers with longer hours said they have lower prescription drug costs and lower office billing costs.
