3 Tips on Patient Communication While Using EHRs

An American Medical News report discusses three important tips for maintaining effective communication with patients while using an electronic health record.

  • Set up the exam room so that the physician is facing the patient. A "basic triangle design" puts the physician, patient and computer screen at each of the three corners in the room.
  • Review the patient's record before entering the room. This will maximize eye contact and interpersonal communication with the patient.
  • Explain what is being done. Physicians should narrate each electronic step — including sending prescriptions and looking up test results — so that the patient has a sense of transparency.
