The average pay for a registered nurse in the U.S. is $68,553, according to a report from job seeker website ZipRecruiter.

ZipRecruiter compiles data from job postings to calculate RN pay. RN pay can vary from $56,000 to $76,500 across the U.S.

The top five states for RN pay:

1. New York - $71,096
2. Massachusetts - $70,718
3. Maryland - $66,833
4. Connecticut - $65,538
5. Vermont - $65,250

The bottom five states for RN pay:

1. Missouri - $56,934
2. Illinois - $56,934
3. Michigan - $56,617
4. Florida - $53,862
5. North Carolina - $50,500
