Surgeons are some of the happiest physicians outside work — Gastroenterology, orthopedics trail behind

Medscape's Physician Lifestyle & Happiness Report revealed what percent of physicians are happy outside their practice, with details on self-esteem, relationships and more.

Medscape surveyed 15,069 physicians across 29-plus specialties from July 27, 2018, through Oct. 16, 2018.

The percent of physicians who are happy outside of work:

1. Rheumatology: 65 percent
2. Otolaryngology: 60 percent
3. Diabetes and endocrinology: 59 percent
4. Pediatrics: 58 percent
5. General surgery: 57 percent
6. Critical care: 57 percent
7. Emergency medicine: 57 percent
8. Ophthalmology: 56 percent
9. Urology: 55 percent
10. Nephrology: 55 percent
11. Plastic surgery: 55 percent
12. Allergy and immunology: 55 percent
13. Pulmonary medicine: 55 percent
14. OB-GYN: 54 percent
15. Orthopedics: 53 percent
16. Radiology: 53 percent
17. Family medicine: 52 percent
18. Anesthesiology: 51 percent
19. Physical medicine and rehabilitation: 51 percent
20. Gastroenterology: 51 percent

Specialists reporting high self-esteem:

1. Plastic surgery: 73 percent
2. Urology: 68 percent
3. Ophthalmology: 67 percent
4. Diabetes and endocrinology: 67 percent
5. Orthopedics: 66 percent
6. Nephrology: 65 percent
7. Pulmonary medicine: 63 percent
8. Gastroenterology: 63 percent
9. Rheumatology: 63 percent
