How is cognitive computing advancing healthcare? 5 ways

Cognitive computing is changing the healthcare game because of the way it mimics the human brain to draw connections between seemingly unrelated data, eWeek reports.

Here's what you need to know.

1. Hill Physicians used to review nearly 11,000 patient charts a year, but through the use of Apixio's cognitive computing platform, physicians can now use electronic health records and scanned chart data faster. That allows for more accurate coding, which helps promote more efficient and effective care.

2. Physicians at UCLA used cognitive computing to uncover several disease trends related to Type 2 diabetes that were previously unknown.

3. Physicians at the Hitchcock Medical Center at Dartmouth University use cognitive offers to predict medical emergencies for patients while they are still at home. The machine has access to their at-home scale and personal blood pressure reader. It analyzes that data, and it allows physicians to draw conclusions.

4. The American Cancer Society uses IBM's Watson supercomputer to filter through websites and data sources to help deliver personalized treatment for oncology patients.

5. Google DeepMind and the National Healthcare System in the United Kingdom partnered to create a smart machine they are hoping could recognize eye disease by using a digital scan.
