CMS has published its final rule to update the fire protection guidelines at healthcare facilities.
The new guidelines apply to ASCs, along with other healthcare facilities, such as hospitals and long term care facilities. The provisions in the final rule cover construction, protection and operational features.
Here are four key provisions:
1. For ASCs specifically, all doors to hazardous areas must be self-closing or must close automatically. Additionally, alcohol-based hand rub dispensers may be placed in corridors to allow for easier access.
2. Healthcare facilities located in buildings that are taller than 75 feet are required to install automatic sprinkler systems within 12 years after the rule's effective date.
3. Healthcare facilities are required to have a fire watch or building evacuation if their sprinkler systems are out-of-service for more than ten hours.
4. Cooking facilities now may have an opening to the hallway corridor.
Healthcare providers must comply with all regulations within 60 days of the publication date of the final rule, which is May 4.
