7 things for ASC leaders to know for Thursday

Here are seven news updates for ambulatory surgery center leaders to know for Sept. 4, 2014.

Illinois legislation leads to changes for Medicare-certified ASCs.
Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed SB 3465 into law, amending the definition of an ASC in Illinois to include "any facility that meets the federal Medicare definition of an ambulatory surgery center," according to an Ambulatory Surgery Center Association of Illinois report.  The legislation also allows the Illinois Department of Public Health to incorporate Medicare standards into ASC reviews automatically, even when the IDPH works through the rulemaking process.

Regent Surgical Health awards 2 scholarships.
Regent Surgical Health awarded two young adults with RISE Scholarships. The scholarship is given to children of Regent partner facility employees who exemplify RISE values — Respectful caring, Integrity, Stewardship and Efficiency through their commitments to families, communities and schools. The program began in 2010 and has awarded more than $10,000 to 15 young adults.

CMS to offer 3 new ICD-10 testing weeks.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced three new weeks for ICD-10 testing. Providers, suppliers, billing companies and clearinghouses can test their ICD-10 coding during these three weeks:

•    Nov. 12 to 21, 2014
•    March 2 to 6, 2015
•    June 1 to 5, 2015

DEA classifies hydrocodone as Schedule II drug.
A decade after the beginning of formal debate over regulation of hydrocodone, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has issued a final rule on classification of hydrocodone combination products, moving the drug combination from a Schedule III to a Schedule II classification.

Northstar Healthcare to list shares on U.S. exchange.
Northstar Healthcare has filed a Form 10 Registration Statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The filing was made in preparation for Northstar common shares to be listed on a U.S. national exchange.

Northwoods Surgery Center officially opens.
Board-certified ophthalmologist Bridget Sundell, MD, and Fairview Range in Hibbing broke ground on the Northwoods Surgery Center in Virginia, Minn., in September 2013. Now, the ribbon has been officially cut on the new facility.

CMS takes Open Payments System offline.
CMS has once again announced its Open Payments website will go offline. CMS brought the site back online on Aug. 18. Physicians — who are allowed to view the portal before the general public — originally had until Aug. 27 to review and dispute any information included in the database. That deadline has now been extended to Sept. 10. The portal is due to go public Sept. 30. Read the full report on Becker's Hospital Review.
