Heavier hip, knee replacement patients have lower blood transfusion rates
Researchers at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit found overweight or obese patients were less likely to require blood transfusions when undergoing hip and knee replacement surgery. The findings revealed the blood transfusion rate for normal BMI patients was 34.8 percent as compared to 21.9 percent for obese BMI patients for hip replacement.

Montefiore employee found dead, locked in hospital bathroom
An employee of Bronx, N.Y.-based Montefiore Medical Center went missing since Thursday and was found dead in a facility bathroom on Monday. The investigation into the employee's death is ongoing with the New York Police Department.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia opens ASC
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in Glen Mills opened the Brandywine Valley Specialty Care and Ambulatory Surgery Center. The facility will be 44,000 square feet and will include more than 20 medical and surgical specialties.

101 economists send Congress a letter in support of Cadillac Tax
The group implores Congress to take no action to weaken, delay or reduce the Cadillac Tax unless Congress implements a tax change that would better curtail cost growth. The tax mandates employers to pay a 40 percent tax on the health benefits they give employees. It will go into effect in 2018.

Larry Robbins raises stake in Tenet by 11%
Founder, Portfolio Management and CEO of hedge fund Glenview Capital Management, Larry Robbins, increased his stake in Tenet Healthcare by more than 11 percent. Mr. Robbins purchased nearly 1.7 million shares for an average price of $36.30 per share.

Houston hospital at risk of losing Medicare funding after patient shooting
CMS warned St. Joseph Medical Center it will lose its Medicare funding starting Oct. 16 unless the hospital amends safety problems that put patients at risk. The CMS claims the hospital did not ensure the off-duty policy officers involved in the shooting of a patient were properly trained in responding to crises involving confused or aggressive patients.

Gramercy Healthcare launches ASC OR optimization solution
Gramercy Healthcare is launching a copyright-registered operating room optimization solution designed for ambulatory surgery centers.
