5 factors driving physicians to consider leaving medicine

Burnout is growing amongst physicians, and many providers consider leaving the field entirely.

Huffington Post outlines five factors which may contribute to a physician's decision to consider quitting.

Here are five factors:

1. Paperwork. The enormous amount of time physicians spend on paperwork takes away from their ability to spend time with patients.

2. Having to meet a quota. Long hours and limited quality time with patients may weigh heavily on physicians. Some providers feel they are meeting a quota rather than meeting patient needs.

3. Patient-provider relationship. Some providers may encounter patients who do not respect them, even if physicians have the patient's best interests at heart. This relationship may take away from a physician's passion and drive to improve care.

4. Dealing with insurance companies. Oftentimes, insurers will deny certain medications that patients need. This process is exhausting for both the patient and the physician, and results in extra work for providers to find medications payers will accept.

5. Long hours. Nights on call and extra hours at the office may take the joy out of medicine.
