45% of outpatient clinic physicians are burned out — 7 statistics

More physicians in outpatient clinics have experienced burnout than physicians in hospitals, according to the Medscape National Physician Burnout, Depression & Suicide Report 2019.

Medscape surveyed 15,069 physicians from 29-plus specialties.

Burnout by work setting:

1. Healthcare organization: 49 percent
2. Outpatient clinic: 45 percent
3. Office-based single-specialty group practice: 44 percent
4. Office-based multispecialty group practice: 44 percent
5. Hospital: 44 percent
6. Academic (nonhospital), research, military, government: 42 percent
7. Office-based solo practice: 41 percent
