3 Steps to Improving Patient Flow

An American Medical News report discusses three strategies for improving patient flow in a medical practice.

  • Communicate clearly with staff members to gain support. Because staff members may be wary of change, it is important to explain why any changes to the patient flow strategy will benefit them and the practice.
  • Assess how patients move through a practice. This can be accomplished by having a physician or staff member accompany a patient throughout the process, from the moment they approach the front door to when they leave the checkout window.
  • Embrace slower changes. When problems and solutions are identified, experts advise opting for more gradual changes than abrupt changes in administrative policy. This will make staff members more comfortable and allow the practice to determine whether the changes are effective.
