USPI vs. Optum vs. Surgery Partners in Q3: 15 notes 

Here are 15 notes from United Surgical Partners International, Surgery Partners and Optum's third quarter financial results:

USPI:

1. USPI hit $941 million in third-quarter operating revenue, an increase from $806 million the year prior. 

2. The 16.7% growth in net operating revenue is attributed to surgical case growth, acquisitions, opening of de novo facilities, service line growth and improved pricing yield, according to the report. 

3. USPI saw a 4.1% increase in same-facility systemwide surgical cases in the third quarter, compared to the year prior.

4. USPI's adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization for the third quarter hit $370 million, up from $319 million in the third quarter of 2022. 

5. USPI now has interests in 457 ASCs, 316 of which are consolidated, and 24 surgical hospitals, eight of which are consolidated, in 35 states.

Surgery Partners

1. Surgery Partners reported revenues of $674 million in the third quarter of this year, representing growth of 8.6% year over year.

2. As of Sept. 30, the company operates 154 surgical facilities, adding nine since last year.

3. The company saw an 11% increase in revenue per case compared to that of the third quarter of 2022.

4. Surgery Partners facilities saw 156,852 cases, an increase of 1.3% compared to the same period last year. 

5. The company's surgical facilities accounted for $657 million of total revenue for the quarter, the rest attributed to ancillary services.

Optum (parent company of ASC chain SCA Health)

1. Optum earned $56.7 billion in total revenue in the third quarter of 2023 — an increase of 22% year over year. 

2. Optum's operating earnings in the third quarter were $3.9 billion, compared to $3.7 billion in the same period last year. 

3. Optum's revenue increased 29% year over year.

4. Optum's revenue per patient increased by 27%, which the company attributed to growth in patients treated under value-based payment models and Optum's expansion into different levels and types of care. 

5. Optum Health's third quarter revenue grew from $18 billion last year to $23.9 billion this year, and the company has earned $70.8 billion this year to date.
