State Rejects New North Carolina Surgery Center Proposal

The North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation has rejected a proposal from FirstHealth of the Carolinas and Rex Healthcare to build an ambulatory surgery center in Harnett County, N.C., according to a report from the Fayetteville Observer.

The two health systems were attempting to build the ASC near Erwin, N.C., by piggybacking off a certificate of need previously issued for a new hospital.

The state ruled the outpatient surgery center did not fall under the umbrella of the original CON and there was not enough justification to transfer the CON for the new project, according to the report.
