New Surgery Center Proposed by Massachusetts' Winchester Hospital Receives Preliminary State Approval

A new ambulatory surgery center proposed by Winchester (Mass.) Hospital has received preliminary state approval, according to a report by The Winchester Star.

The draft approval from the Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act for the hospital to build a 32,000-square-foot ASC comes after the project received approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals in the summer.

The hospital had hoped to build a 95,000-square-foot ASC this year but that project was appealed by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and neighbors, delaying its approval.

Winchester Hospital, which reported that its seven ORs are regularly booked, changed its plans applied for the special permit for the smaller ASC, according to earlier reports. The hospital has not abandoned its plans for the larger project but will need to reapply for permits.

The commentary period for the draft decision expires Dec. 29, with a final decision expected from MEPA expected shortly thereafter.
